Pet therapy has long been recognised as a valuable tool in supporting individuals living with mental health conditions. The simple act of interacting with or petting an animal has been proven to contribute to and aid someone’s overall well-being, releasing endorphins that create a calming effect.
At Maplebrook Care Home, we are passionate animal lovers, and our most recent visitor, Cisco, is a friendly and beloved presence known for bringing smiles to the faces of our residents with his playful personality. Whether engaging in a game of fetch, enjoying a leisurely stroke, or going for a walk outdoors, we cherish the moments of joy and companionship that dogs bring to our home.
The outcomes of pet therapy are extensive, encompassing physical, social, and emotional improvements. For example, activities such as petting a dog or playing fetch can improve motor skills and joint movements. Socially, interactions with animals provide companionship, encourage physical movement, and facilitate communication. Additionally, spending time with animals has been shown to improve overall mood and reduce blood pressure, highlighting the holistic benefits of animal therapy.
At Maplebrook, every introduction of animals to new residents is approached with careful consideration. We ensure that the process is taken one step at a time, prioritising the happiness, comfort, and safety of everyone involved.
Kym Hubbard, Peripatetic Manager, said: “Bringing dogs or other animals into the home for pet therapy instantly brings a smile, happiness, and a sense of playfulness to our residents. We find that dogs have a very calming impact as well, fostering a sense of peace and tranquillity within our community.”
At Maplebrook Care Home, we recognise and embrace the profound healing power of animal therapy. Through our commitment to providing holistic care, we continue to integrate animal companionship as a meaningful component of our residents’ well-being.
