Promoting Independence at Maplebrook

At Maplebrook, we know that our residents have given up much of their independence in entering a group living situation. Therefore, it is very important to foster independence wherever our residents can so they maintain autonomy over their own lives. Some residents can even become more independent than they were in their own homes.

Maintaining a routine is of great benefit to residents. Continuing with weekly tasks carried out before moving into the care home is encouraged, with care staff doing their best to support residents to continue with the commitments that were important to them.

Taking care of their own personal hygiene and dressing is made possible with the use of special equipment and aids to assist where required. We also encourage residents to take on responsibilities to give a sense of purpose, belonging and prevent boredom, as we appreciate unlimited leisure time is not for everyone. Small tasks like gardening, helping with laundry or mending clothes, for example, can be both relaxing and stimulating.

Our dedicated Activities Lead, organises a schedule of activities to ensure residents have a range to choose from, including gardening, baking and games. Engaging in social activities within the care home and going on excursions helps encourage a stimulating and active social life.

We understand that receiving and playing host to visitors is important. There are kitchenettes on all levels to allow residents to make drinks and light snacks if they so wish, and lots of spacious areas to entertain.

We have found that promoting independence brings renewed confidence and boosts self-esteem. Each resident at Maplebrook is very much an individual, with help always on hand when required.
